Why this update?
Eufy remains a popular retail brand, but there’s been ongoing scrutiny of its security and privacy practices. If you’re weighing up Eufy vs a pro system, here’s our plain-English view from the jobs we do across Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Masterton, Carterton, Greytown, Featherston, and the rural bits in between.
What Eufy does well
- DIY-friendly & quick to start: Unbox, connect to Wi-Fi, and you’re away.
- Good app experience: Smart notifications, human/pet detection on newer models.
- No mandatory subscription for basic use: Local microSD or HomeBase storage available.
- Budget-friendly: Great if you’re renting or just need a single room covered.
- Colour at night (with spotlight): Many models can record colour at night by switching on a small white light.
The catches we see locally
- Wi-Fi reality locally: Lifestyle blocks, long driveways, tin sheds, and thick walls can chew up signal. Battery/cordless gear struggles where a wired PoE camera just works.
- Missed moments on battery cams: Battery units conserve power by recording on motion only—fine for a doorstep, risky for proof when events start just off-frame.
- Retention & evidence: MicroSDs are easy to remove; 24/7 recording with 30+ days retention is far more robust on an NVR.
- Night detail matters: Grayscale IR often misses clothing colours and car paint. Full-time colour (bright lenses + gentle warm LEDs) helps with identification and plates.
- Privacy & trust track record: In 2022–23, reporting highlighted issues including unencrypted streams and cloud uploads despite “local” claims; the company later acknowledged a web-portal flaw and clarified its practices.
- Recent AI training headlines: Separate reporting in 2025 covered campaigns encouraging users to submit “theft” clips to train AI—worth reading if privacy is a priority.
Colour at night: why we prefer “full-time colour”
If identification is the goal, colour is king. Pro-grade cameras with large F1.0–F1.2 lenses + warm supplemental light stay in colour all night with less glare, better skin tones, and more usable evidence than standard IR grayscale.
Where this really helps: driveways, shop fronts, yard perimeters, and any spot you might need vehicle colour or clothing details.

A simple buyer’s checklist (Wellington region)
- Map your Wi-Fi: If coverage drops at the gate or shed, go wired PoE.
- Decide on retention: How many days of footage do you want, really?
- Identify critical angles: Doorways are easy—driveways and perimeters need planning.
